The Museum of Modern Art celebrates the early work of Tony Award-winning Hairspray and Smash songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman February 12 as part of its Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983 exhibition.

Michael Musto joins the writers for the 7 PM conversation and mini-concert that will trace the birth of their careers as part of the New York City’s Lower East Side club scene in the 1980s.

The evening features performances by Annie Golden (Orange Is the New Black, Hair) and Laura Kenyon, both of whom appeared in Shaiman's first Off-Broadway musical, Dementos, as well as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory cast member Jake Ryan Flynn.

“What Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman did with few resources—beyond the raw energy of the downtown club scene, a band of fledgling, gender-bending performers and their own remarkable talent—is a too little-known New York miracle. We’re honored to have a role in bringing this nearly lost theater history back to life at MoMA on stage and on screen,” said Club 57 curators Ron Magliozzi and Sophie Cavoulacos in a joint statement.

Shaiman and Wittman earned the Tony Award for Best Original Score for Hairspray in 2003. Their Broadway musicals also include Catch Me If You Can and the recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Their work on the NBC musical series Smash, which they co-produced, gave life to the Broadway-aimed Marilyn Monroe musical Bombshell.
