Broadway is about to travel down to Hadestown, after audiences have patiently waited for the original musical to have a second life after its 2016 New York Theatre Workshop debut.
Since then, the musical from co-creator and composer-lyricist Anaïs Mitchell and co-creator and Tony-nominated director Rachel Chavkin (The Great Comet) has undergone a metamorphosis during productions in Canada and London’s West End. And now it officially opens at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre April 17.

Hadestown, as Mitchell explains in the video above, follows the intertwining love stories of couples Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades and Persephone. “That older couple and the Gods and Hermes, they kind of wrote themselves,” says Mitchell. “The characters that have been the trickiest to write are the young lovers, Orpheus and Eurydice.”
But together with Chavkin and their company of actors—including Reeve Carney (Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark), Tony nominee Eva Noblezada (Miss Saigon), Amber Gray (The Great Comet), Patrick Page (Spring Awakening), and André De Shields (The Wiz)—Mitchell has found the right details for the sound and story’s Broadway incarnation.
As Noblezada says, “Now that we have all the pieces together it's caught on fire.”
