La Jolla Playhouse has announced full programming for Without Walls, a festival of boundary-breaking theatrical works that will take place October 19–22 in site specific productions across San Diego.
Festival highlights include FAETOPIA: A Faerie Flash Mob, created by award-winning puppeteer Basil Twist (Arias With a Twist, Symphonie Fantastique). Twist, who is in residence at La Jolla this year, created the family-friendly, 10-minute piece that will be presented at The New Children’s Museum.
Scenic designer Mimi Lien, who won a Tony for her dazzling work on the immersive Broadway musical spectacle Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, will premiere Model Home—a performative installation that will hoist a brightly colored archetypal house from a large construction crane in downtown San Diego as commentary on the shifting infrastructure of a changing city.
CVRTAIN, a virtual reality experience from Yehuda Duenyas, will put participants center stage in a beautiful theatre as they take their final curtain call. The experience requires guests to take bows, blow kisses, and perform other gestures to prompt the VR audience to applaud. Staged on a proscenium installation in the Athenaeum Arts Center, CVRTAIN allows onlookers to witness the virtial and real at the same time.

The Berlin-based Gob Squad Arts Collective will present Super Night Shot, a live cinematic journey through the streets of San Diego at night, with surprise encounters and unexpected scenes in which the audience becomes co-stars in a collaborative film.
Sledgehmmer Theatre will immerse audiences in a pop-up college banquet hall as part of Charles Mee’s Under Construction: An American Masque, which will unfold in a series of scenes, songs, and dances inspired by Norman Rockwell’s depiction of 1950s America juxtaposed against the work of installation artist Jason Rhoades.
