The Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770, Harvard’s comedy and satire performing arts organization, will honor Tony and Emmy-winning designer Derek McLane with the Order of the Golden Sphinx Award at its 2018 gala.

The celebration will take place April 16 at The Pierre at New York City.

The award is traditionally given to members of the entertainment industry for their contributions to the performing arts. Previous recipients include Tony-winning producer Daryl Roth and music producer Clive Davis.

“Whether you've encountered Derek's work on a Broadway stage or at this year's Oscars, you're sure to have seen it,” said Hasty Pudding Chairman Andrew L. Farkas in a statement. “And so we are privileged to present the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770’s highest honor, The Order of The Golden Sphinx, to Derek McLane, a man who creates the striking visuals and impressions that stay with us long after a show ends.”

“My work as a set designer actually began in Harvard’s dining halls when I was an undergrad, and so it is with tremendous gratitude that I accept the Order of the Golden Sphinx Award,” added McLane. “In addition to my fond memories of the Hasty Pudding, I have long admired their passionate commitment to performing arts education—and drag shows! It is a privilege to be included amongst such esteemed honorees.”

McLane, who studied English literature at Harvard before studying set design at Yale, won a Tony for his scenic design for 2009’s 33 Variations, receiving additional nods for the 2011 revival of Anything Goes and 2006’s The Pajama Game. His work can be seen this spring in Broadway’s Children of a Lesser God and this summer’s Getting’ The Band Back Together. He won Emmys for his designs for the 2014 Oscars and NBC’s Hairspray Live!.
