New York City Opera returned January 6 with a production of Leonard Bernstein’s musical Candide, which continues through January 15 at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater in New York City.
Tony Award winner Harold Prince, who staged a revised version of the operetta on Broadway in 1974 (and for NYCO in 1982), directs the NYCO run that stars Jay Armstrong Johnson (Sweeney Todd, On the Town; The Most Happy Fella) as Candide; Gregg Edelman (City of Angels, Passion, Into the Woods) as Voltaire, Pangloss, Governor, Businessman, Police Chief, 2nd Gambler, and Wisest Man; Meghan Picerno (Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, Hansel and Gretel) as Cunegonde; and Linda Lavin (The Lyons, Other Desert Cities, Hollywood Arms) as the Old Lady.
