The family-friendly New Victory Theater has announced its 2016-17 season, which will include two world premieres, six U.S. premieres and six New York debuts. The slate features 15 productions from 11 different countries.
In November, the New Victory will present the New York premiere of Chotto Desh, Akram Khan Company’s dance theatre piece. The show uses contemporary dance, humorous text and an original score to tell a cross-cultural story about being “other.” Performances are set to run November 4-13.
Highlights of the season also include the premiere of Caesar/X, scheduled for March 2017. The Acting Company production presents Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar in repertory with Marcus Gardley’s X, about the assassination of Malcolm X. Performances are set to run March 17-26.
Also in March, Beth Morrison Projects, VisionIntoArt and Brooklyn Youth Chorus will present Aging Magician, a new opera-theatre work by Julian Crouch, Rinde Eckert and Paola Prestini. The show combines live music, theatre, puppetry, instrument making and scenic design to tell the story of an aging clockmaker. Performances will run March 3-12.
The season line-up also includes Elephant & Piggie’s We Are in a Play!, a musical adaptation based on the popular children’s books; Circus Der Sinne’s Mother Africa: My Home, featuring 26 acrobats, jugglers, dancers and contortionists from seven African nations; and the Jules Verne classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, directed by Rick Miller and Craig Francis, among other shows.
