A macabre tale of subway tunnel denizens and questionable empanadas is heading from stage to podcast to screen. A TV series adaptation of the Gimlet podcast The Horror of Dolores Roach is in the works with Blumhouse Television acquiring the rights, according to Deadline.
Aaron Mark is set to write the series and serve as co-executive producer, having penned and directed the podcast and created its source material, the monologue play Empanada Loca. Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega starred in both the stage play and subsequent podcast and will serve as a consulting producer for the series.
The Horror of Dolores Roach tells the story of a massage therapist who, following a 16-year prison stint, returns to New York City, reconnects with her old stoner friend who lets her take clients in the basement of his rundown empanada shop. In a Sweeney Todd-esque spin, the two devise a cannibalistic scheme to survive the dog-eat-dog (so to speak) world.The producing team will also include Chris Giliberti and Justin McGoldrick of Gimlet Pictures, Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, Marci Wiseman, and Jeremy Gold.
