Cate Blanchett, who earned a Tony nomination earlier this year for her Broadway debut in The Present, is one step closer to portraying comedy icon Lucille Ball on screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon has acquired the rights to the biopic project, which has its eyes on the two-time Oscar winner and will feature a script by Aaron Sorkin.
The film was first reported in 2015. A director has yet to be announced. Ball and Desi Arnaz’s children, Broadway alum Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., will produce with the Sony-based Escape Artists.
While Blanchett just made her Broadway debut earlier this year, she boasts a prolific stage career in both Sydney and New York, and she is also set to take on the role of Margo Channing in Ivo van Hove’s upcoming stage adaptation of All About Eve in London.
Her myriad film credits include Oscar-winning turns in Blue Jasmine and The Aviator, as well as Carol and the upcoming Ocean’s Eight.
