Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse launched its 2018–2019 season—the first under the leadership of Artistic Director Matt Shakman—with the world premiere of José Rivera’s The Untranslatable Secrets of Nikki Corona. Performances will run September 4–October 7 at the Gil Cates Theater.
Oscar nominee Rivera’s new play is a technology-driven take on the Orpheus myth and follows a woman who, after losing her twin sister, is given the opportunity to communicate with the dead, leading to a journey through a surprising afterlife universe.
Directed by Jo Bonney, the cast features Cate Scott Campbell, Ricardo Chavira, Zilah Mendoza, Onahoua Rodriguez, and Juan Francisco Villa.
The production has scenic design by Myung Hee Cho, costume design by Stephanie Kerley Schwartz, lighting design by Lap Chi Chu, sound design by Cricket S. Myers, and projection design by Hana S. Kim. Also working on the show are dramaturg Rachel Wiegardt-Egel, production stage manager Ross Jackson, assistant stage manager Julie Ann Renfro, and casting director Phyllis Schuringa, CSA.
