Next up at the Minetta Lane Theatre, Audible's new home for live performance in New York, will be Chisa Hutchinson's Proof of Love—a monologue commissioned by the audio production company through its $5 million Emerging Playwrights fund. The world premiere, directed by Jade King Carroll (The Gin Game, Hello From the Children of Planet Earth), will star Suzzanne Douglas (The Parent 'Hood, School of Rock).
Proof of Love will begin May 7 ahead of a May 14 opening.
The new work is centered on Constance, whose happy life and upper-class Black family is splintered by a sudden and tragic accident.
Proof of Love is the inaugural production to come out of Audible's Emerging Playwright program, which currently includes 25 commissions. The world premiere is a co-production between Audible and New York Theatre Workshop.
“I don’t know what kind of crazy cosmic voodoo magic was working to get Audible to look at me and go, ‘Yeah, her. Let’s give her this ridiculously awesome platform.’ Ahead of writers way more established, too, so it’s clear they’re not just interested in only backing winners, but making them," says Hutchinson. "Plus, as a Newarker, it means a great deal to me that a Newark-based bad-ass is behind me and my work.”
The full creative team for Proof of Love will be announced soon. Tickets will go on sale March 18.
Hutchinson's play Surely Goodness and Mercy is currently receiving its Off-Broadway premiere at Theatre Row in a production from Keen Company. The production opens March 13.
