Jeanine Tesori, Tony-winning composer of Fun Home, is writing songs for a musical that will be featured as part of the plot of an upcoming Gilmore Girls reboot, according to Warner Bros.
Tentatively titled Summer, the film will be shown on Netflix, at a date to be announced, later this year.
Appearing in the musical-within-a-film will be Broadway stalwarts including Tony winner Sutton Foster (The Drowsy Chaperone), Tony winner Christian Borle (Something Rotten!) and three-time Tony nominee Kerry Butler (Disaster!).
Gilmore Girls is the story of single mother Lorelai and her daughter Rory who live in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, CT. In the upcoming reboot the history of Stars Hollow will be told in the style of a musical.
Gilmore Girls began life as a TV series that aired on the WB and then CW networks from 2000 to 2007. Its cult following persisted long after it was canceled. In response to a social media campaign, Netflix announced it would resurrect the series in a series of short films, collectively titled Gilmore Girls: Seasons, of which Summer will be a part.
Broadway veterans Kelly Bishop and Sally Struthers were also featured in the series.
