Colleges and universities from around the country have taken to booking Times Square venues in recent years to showcase their latest crop of Broadway hopefuls. But few have able to muster the kind of big-name talent that the University of Michigan will call up for its May 16 Maize & Blue on Broadway event, for which the school has nabbed Broadway's August Wilson Theatre, home of Jersey Boys.
The 7 PM one-night-only benefit concert will feature appearances and/or performances by celebrity alumni including Fiddler on the Roof lyricist Sheldon Harnick; performers Gavin Creel, Hunter Foster, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Nick Blaemire, Erin Dilly and Darren Criss; plus songwriters Andrew Lippa, Jeff Marx, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
The event celebrates the University of Michigan and its renowned Musical Theatre Department, as well as honoring its longtime chair, Brent Wagner, who is retiring in May after 32 years.
The event is open to the public. For tickets visit MMTAEF.com, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or go to the Ticketmaster link Ticketmaster.com/event/03005071979F1969.
