Robert Petkoff (All the Way, Anything Goes) and Jon Tenney (The Heiress, Beggars in the House of Plenty) complete the cast of Lincoln Center Theater's fall production of The Hard Problem by Tom Stoppard. They join the previously announced cast, led by Adelaide Clemens as Hilary.
The Hard Problem, directed by Jack O'Brien, will begin performances October 25 iin the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater ahead of a November 19 opening.
In the new play, Hilary (Clemens) is a young psychology researcher at the Krohl Institute for Brain Science. If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? This is “the hard problem” facing science, and for Hilary the possibility of genuine altruism, without a hidden Darwinian self-interest, depends on the answer.
As previously announced, the cast will also include Eshan Bay, John Patrick Doherty, Nina Grollman, Katie Beth Hall, Eleanor Handley, Olivia Hebert, Sagar Kiran, Chris O’Shea, Madeleine Pace, Tara Summers, Baylen Thomas, Kim N. Wong, and Karoline Xu.
The production will feature scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, sound design by Marc Salzberg, and original music by Bob James.
The Hard Problem received its world premiere at London’s National Theatre in 2015, directed by Nicholas Hytner and made its U.S. premiere in Philadelphia in 2016 at the Wilma Theater.
