The cast is set for the upcoming City Center Encores! Off-Center presentation of Working, running June 26–29. Among the cast are Oscar winner Helen Hunt (in her musical theatre debut) and a pair of Hamilton alums: Tony nominee Christopher Jackson and Javier Muñoz.
Rounding out the company are Andréa Burns (On Your Feet!), Mateo Ferro (Kennedy Center’s In the Heights), Tony nominee David Garrison (The Visit), and Tracie Thoms (Falsettos).
Off-Center Artistic Director Anne Kauffman will direct the production, featuring choreography by Avihai Haham and music direction by Alvin Hough, Jr.
Originally presented on Broadway in 1978, the musical is adapted from Studs Terkel’s book exploring the lives of those in the American workforce, by composer Stephen Schwartz and librettist Nina Faso. The updated adaptation features additional material from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Gordon Greenberg, Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, and James Taylor.
As previously reported, the Off-Center season will continue in the summer with the late María Irene Fornés’ Promenade and Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Road Show. All three, according to Kauffman, tackle the question: "How are we defining success and freedom these days, and who in this country has access to them?"
Returning to City Center for the three-show series is the Lobby Project, a collaboration with the performance group The Civilians, which will offer pre-performance presentations of works inspired by the musicals.
