L.A.’s Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts has announced its 2016-17 season line-up. The theatre slate is set to feature a staging of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along and a new Deaf West Theatre co-production of Edward Albee’s At Home at the Zoo, which will incorporate sign language.
2016 Tony nominee Michael Arden, who directed Deaf West’s Spring Awakening on Broadway, will stage Merrily, with performances scheduled to begin November 22. The staging will be separate from Arden’s work with Deaf West.
Casting will be announced at a later date for an engagement scheduled through December 18. The director will also helm Alexi Kaye Campbell's drama The Pride at the Center in June 2017.
In March, the Wallis is teaming up with Deaf West once again for a new staging of At Home at the Zoo, to be directed by Coy Middlebrook. The companies will incorporate sign language into Albee’s classic piece, made up of two plays, in a production set to feature both Deaf and hearing actors. Performances are scheduled to run March 7 through 26.
Also slated for next spring, the theatre will welcome the renowned team of Peter Brook, Marie-Hélène Estienne and Jean-Claude Carrière with their production of Battlefied, based on Brook’s Mahabharata.
The line-up is completed by the live theatrical concert, Scorsese: An American Crime Requiem (September 21-October 16); Kneehigh, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Berkeley Repertory Theatre’ 946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips, adapted by Michael Morpurgo and Emma Rice (February 9-March 5, 2017); Filter Theatre in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s staging of Twelfth Night, directed by Sean Holmes (March 14-19); Simon McBurney’s solo show The Encounter, inspired by the novel Amazon Beaming about a National Geographic photographer who is lost in the jungle (April 6-16); and Hershey Felder’s Tchaikovsky: A Play with Music, written and performed by Hershey Felder with direction by Trevor Hay (July 19-August 2017.)
