Local 802—the union representing professional musicians who play nightly in shows on Broadway as well as other major live performing arts institutions and for television—has announced a new three-year agreement with The Broadway League, securing wage and healthcare increases and a new 401(k) retirement plan.

According to the terms of the new agreement with The Broadway League the new contract includes an annual 3.5 percent wage increase, as well as a 23 percent increase in healthcare contributions from employers over the duration of the contract, which continues through March 3, 2022.

Local 802 and The League also agreed to an unprecedented 401(k) retirement plan for professional performing arts musicians, which will help alleviate forthcoming reductions from the union’s American Federation of Musicians and Employers’ Pension Fund. The program is projected to run out of money within the next two decades.

The new contract additionally includes a key provision to secure long-term employment for orchestrators when a production transfers to Broadway. Under the new agreement, they will now have the option to continue on with the production as conductors and/or instrumentalists if they have also served in the same capacity for at least 50 percent of the show’s previous run Off-Broadway or out-of-town.

Local 802 members voted to approve the contract by a margin of 93 percent.
