Featuring book and lyrics by Elizabeth Searle, who also conceived the work, and music by Michael Teoli, the musical satire is based on the 1994 scandal surrounding a vicious attack on Kerrigan that nearly derailed her from the 1994 Olympic games. The attack was later traced back to Harding's team.
Here's how the musical is billed: "In 1994, skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked with a 'knee whack' and suspicions were focused on fellow Team USA skater Tonya Harding. Tonya & Nancy: The Rock Opera is a dark musical comedy, with heart, about the feud between Olympic figure skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, with a score in the style of Queen meets the Trans-Siberian Orchestra."
Directed by David Alpert (If/Then), with musical direction by Henry Aronson (Rock of Ages), and choreography by Marc Kimelman (A Bronx Tale), performances will run July 9-16 at PCT Performing Space.
In addition to McDowell as Harding and Green as Kerrigan, the cast will include Liz McCartney (Ever After, Taboo) as Mom, Tony LePage (Rock of Ages) as Jeff Gillooly, with Andrew Aaron Berlin, Heidi Friese, Chase Kamata, Tatiana Lofton, Ryan MacConnell and Dwayne Washington.
The creative team includes Starlet Jacobs (scenic and properties designer), Vanessa Leuck (costume designer), Rui Rita (lighting designer) and Alex Hawthorn (sound designer).
