Music Theatre International has picked up worldwide licensing rights to The Band’s Visit. The new musical opened at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre last year and is nominated for 11 Tony Awards.
Additional details regarding professional and amateur licensing will be announced at a later date.
The world-premiere production, directed by David Cromer, premiered Off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company. David Yazbek’s score and Itamar Moses’ book, based on the 2007 film, blend to tell the story of a group of Egyptian police band members who, after a mix-up at the border, are sent to a remote village in the Israeli desert. Music helps for unexpected bonds as the locals take the band in for the night.
“The Band's Visit offers a rare blend of humanity at its best and humor with universal appeal. The seamless interplay between Itamar Moses' book and David Yazbek's score produces a moving experience for audience members of all ages and backgrounds, not to mention for the performers themselves,” MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen said in a statement. “Anyone who has been a stranger in a foreign land or a newcomer to any environment will empathize with the characters in The Band's Visit. Moreover, every actor and musician will appreciate the opportunity to participate in what is, in the end, a joyous celebration of humankind.”
