Manhattan Theatre Club has announced the addition of two new productions to the 2017–18 season. On Broadway, the company will produce the American premiere of the Royal Court Theatre production of The Children, a new play by Lucy Kirkwood, and Off-Broadway, MTC will present the New York debut of Actually by Photograph 51 playwright Anna Ziegler.
The Children will play the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre this fall starring three of the original acclaimed London cast: Francesca Annis, Ron Cook, and Deborah Findlay. James Macdonald, who helmed the Royal Court staging, as well as Top Girls at MTC, returns to direct.
The Children tells the story of two retired nuclear engineers living in a remote cottage on the British coast. When an old friend turns up at their door, a shocking discovery disrupts their quiet existence.
The Broadway engagement is set to begin previews November 28 ahead of a December 14 opening night. Further casting will be announced at a later date.
Ziegler’s Actually, a co-production with Williamstown Theatre Festival, will also play in the fall. Directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, the new play tells the story of Princeton University students Amber and Tom, whose common freshmen experiences suddenly become anything but.
Actually will begin previews October 31 at The Studio at Stage II – The Harold and Mimi Steinberg New Play Series, ahead of a November 14 opening night. Casting and the creative team will be announced at a later date.
The creative team for The Children is made up of scenic and costume designer Miriam Buether, lighting designer Peter Mumford, and sound designer Max Pappenheim.
