Theatres around the country looking for something with a little more spookiness can relax: Music Theatre International has secured licensing rights to the family favorite Spookley The Square Pumpkin: The Musical.
With a book and lyrics by original author Joe Troiano and music by Jeffrey Zahn and adapted from the book and animated special, the musical about a square pumpkin in a round pumpkin patch whose only friends are spiders Edgar, Allen, and Poe, Spookley proves that being different can sometimes be a good thing—especially if a storm threatens the beloved Holiday Hill Farm.
Originally directed and conceived by Jeff Frank and First Stage, the musical premiered in Milwaukee in 2015.
MTI’s President and CEO, Drew Cohen stated, “Spookley, with its universal themes and delightful score is perfect for all audiences, year-round. Of course, with a main character who is a pumpkin, it is uniquely well-suited for the fall season and we are thrilled to make Spookley available in time for Halloween season this year. Spookley’s track record of commercial success reflects how beloved this character—and indeed this musical—have become.”
