The Roundabout Theatre Company production of Lydia R. Diamond’s Toni Stone officially opens Off-Broadway June 20. The play, directed by Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon, is the story of Toni Stone, the first woman baseball player to go pro in the Negro Leagues, and the first woman ever to play professionally in a men's baseball league.
Toni Stone plays Roundabout's Laura Pels Theatre, where previews began May 23.
The world premiere stars April Matthis in the title role, alongside an all-male ensemble made up of Eric Berryman, Harvy Blanks, Phillip James Brannon, Daniel J. Bryant, Jonathan Burke, Toney Goins, Kenn E. Head, and Ezra Knight.
Toni Stone is based on the book Curveball, The Remarkable Story of Toni Stone by Martha Ackmann.
The creative team is made up of Camille A. Brown (choreography), Riccardo Hernandez (sets), Allen Lee Hughes (lights), Dede Ayite (costumes), and Daniel Baker and Aaron Meicht (original music and sound design).
The play was commissioned by Roundabout Theatre Company; the world premiere is produced in association with Samantha Barrie.
