The Broadway musical Grand Hotel, which returned to New York earlier this year for run at City Center Encores!, opened November 12, 1989, at the Martin Beck Theatre.
The musical, which features a book by Luther Davis and a score by Robert Wright and George Forrest (with additional songs by Maury Yeston), went on to play over a thousand performances. Set in the opulent lobby of a prestigious Berlin hotel, the comedy features an ever-revolving door or colorful characters, including the faded ballerina Grushinskaya, a bookkeeper in his last days, and a secretary who dreams of Hollywood stardom.
Directed and choreographed by Tommy Tune, the original cast featured David Carroll, Karen Akers, Jane Krakowski, Michael Jeter, and Liliane Montevecchi.
