John Cameron Mitchell’s music-driven podcast anthology, Anthem: Homunculus, is set to debut April 23 on the new streaming platform Luminary. The Hedwig creator and star appears in a cast that also features Tony Award winners Glenn Close, Cynthia Erivo, Patti LuPone, Denis O’Hare, and James Monroe Iglehart.
In Homunculus, Mitchell plays a broke, solitary, and bitterly funny shut-in, named Ceann Mackay, who launches the world’s first online radio “tumor telethon” to raise money to remove his brain tumor. The audience is taken on a darkly hilarious journey of his life story through flashback and song, until sudden fame arrives when he realizes the thing that is killing him may be the very thing that will save us all.

Topic produces the series that will pair a new team of writers—a songwriter and a storyteller—for each season in the anthology. Homunculus features a story by Mitchell, who co-wrote songs with composer Bryan Weller.
Ghostlight Records has also announced plans to release the show’s soundtrack.
The cast of Anthem: Homunculus also features South African singer/songwriter Nakhane, Laurie Anderson, Simone, Christopher Hanke, Ben Foster, Madeline Brewer, Justin Vivian Bond, and Bridget Everett.
