The movie musical La La Land was named Best Film of 2016 by the New York Film Critics Circle December 1.
The movie‘s score is written by the award-winning team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, whose latest Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen, is scheduled to open December 4.
La La Land, which won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, recently released a new trailer in advance of its December 9 limited U.S. release.
Distributed by Lionsgate, the film will then open at theatres across the U.S. December 16.
Written and directed by Whiplash’s Damien Chazelle, the movie pays tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals and stars Emma Stone (Cabaret), Ryan Gosling, John Legend, and J. K. Simmons (winner of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Whiplash, and who appeared on Broadway in Guys and Dolls). The film has a score of songs co-written by Justin Hurwitz and the Tony-nominated team of Pasek & Paul (A Christmas Story, Dogfight).

The film, which is being touted as a 2017 Oscar Best Film contender, made its world premiere earlier this summer at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, and made its U.S. premiere at the early-September Telluride Festival in Colorado.
