Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez Preview Two New Songs for Broadway’s Frozen | Playbill

Broadway News Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez Preview Two New Songs for Broadway’s Frozen The Oscar-winning songwriting team wrote several numbers specifically for the stage adaptation of the Disney hit.

As Disney’s stage adaptation of Frozen approaches its Broadway premiere, the husband-and-wife songwriting team of Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez offered a sampling of two tunes not heard in the animated film that audiences can expect to hear onstage.

The two won an Oscar for “Let It Go,” and while the breakout anthem (and the other familiar favorites) will make their way to the stage, the musical will feature more than twice as many numbers than the movie.

The first song written for the stage adaptation was “Dangerous to Dream,” a new Act I solo for Elsa. The number serves as an “I Want” internal monologue during her coronation. “It’s an ‘I want’ for a girl who’s not allowed to want anything,” says Anderson-Lopez. “What was interesting about expanding the movie to the stage is that so much of Elsa’s story is told through close-up. All of her angst comes through eyes and shaking hands, and you can’t do that onstage. We needed to take a song that basically musicalized those close-ups.” Watch Anderson-Lopez perform a portion of the song above.

Another addition to the score, shown below, further explores the relationship between Anna and Kristoff. The duet, titled “What Do You Know About Love,” replaces action sequences with melodies to chart their blossoming dynamic. “By the time that they’ve both been in peril and spent some time going up this mountain, they now have a newfound respect for one another and they’ve crossed into a new level of their friendship,” says Lopez.

Disney will release both songs, along with new tunes “True Love” and “Monster,” on four consecutive Fridays during the Broadway production’s preview period.

The Michael Grandage-directed production, starring Caissie Levy as Elsa, Patti Murin as Anna, Jelani Alladin as Kristoff, and John Riddle as Hans, will officially open March 22 at the St. James Theatre following previews that begin February 22.
