KPOP co-creator Jason Kim is developing a new HBO series about Los Angeles' Koreatown, according to The Wrap. The new comedy is created with Greta Lee (Inside Amy Schumer, Girls).
Kim and Lee both worked on HBO's Girls (the former as a writer, the latter a performer). They serve as co-writers and executive producers on the new series KTown, following an influential family at the center of the L.A. neighborhood.
KPOP features a book by Kim and was conceived by Kim and Woodshed Collective with music and lyrics by Helen Park and Max Vernon (The View UpStairs), an immersive design by Woodshed Collective, choreography by Jennifer Weber (The Hip Hop Nutcracker), and direction by Teddy Bergman (Empire Travel Agency).
The musical played an acclaimed, sold-out engagement Off-Broadway through Ars Nova, Ma-Yi Theater, and the Woodshed Collective last fall. The high-energy production, which wove dance, music, a concert, and intimate storytelling, took theatregoers on a backstage tour of a K-pop music factory and was staged in several different spaces within A.R.T./New York Theaters. The show is aiming for a New York return next year.
