Kerry Washington (ABC’s Scandal) and Steven Pasquale (this season’s Junk) will return to the stage to headline the Broadway premiere of Christopher Demos-Brown’s American Son. Tony winner Kenny Leon (represented on Broadway this season with Children of a Lesser God) will direct.
Performances will begin October 6 at the Booth Theatre (currently the home of The Boys in the Band). Opening night is set for November 4.
The drama is set in a Florida police station and follows Kendra and Scott, a separated, interracial couple that reunites as they must grapple with the disappearance of their teenage son. Eugene Lee (Gem of the Ocean) will also appear as Lieutenant John Stokes.
“Christopher Demos-Brown has written a play that dives deep into the big questions of who we are as a nation, by exploring the intimate relationships within a family caught at the crossroads of love, loss, identity and community,” says star Kerry Washington. “After reading the script I was immediately enthralled by the world of the play and the gripping circumstances that these characters are facing. I am excited to step into the ring with Kenny and Steve to tell this story on Broadway.”
The production will feature sets by Derek McLane, costumes by Dede Ayite, and sound design by Peter Fitzgerald. Additional casting and creative team members will be announced at a later date.
American Son received its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company in 2016 after winning the Laurents/Hatcher Award for Best New Play by an Emerging Playwright. The play will mark Demos-Brown's Broadway debut.
