Civilians’ artist Jo Lampert and more will sing the songs of the late Michael Friedman at the company's upcoming spring benefit event in New York City. The event, which will be held at the Cutting Room April 1, will honor Emmy-nominated documentary filmmakers Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg and The Civilians' former managing director Marion Friedman Young.

The evening’s program features special guests Rachel Dratch, Clifton Duncan, Ashley Pérez Flanagan, and Daphne Rubin-Vega; original songs created for the event by Nick Blaemire, The Bengsons, Maggie-Kate Coleman and Erato Kremmyda, as well as songs from The Civilians' 2018–2019 season by Michael R. Jackson and Zack Zadek.

Performing Friedman's songs along with Lampert will be the original cast of This Beautiful City: Emily Ackerman, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Stephen Plunkett, and Alison Weller.

The evening, titled Civilian Disobedience, will kick off at 6:30 PM. Musical direction is by Wiley DeWeese.

Civilian Disobedience embraces all those who speak (or sing) truth to power,” says The Civilians’ founding artistic director Steve Cosson. “I believe wholeheartedly that the vital stories that Ricki Stern, Annie Sundberg, and Marion Friedman Young have brought into the world have deepened our humanity and enlightened our understanding of society. I’m humbled that such an amazing group of artists have come together to help us see the present moment more clearly.”
