Irish Repertory Theatre will return to the play—and the playwright—that started it all as it continues its 30th anniversary season in 2019. The Off-Broadway company will kick off the new year with a retrospective of work by renowned Irish playwright Sean O'Casey, including his 1926 play and Irish Rep's first-ever production in 1988, The Plough and the Stars.

The O’Casey Cycle will run January through May, featuring three mainstage productions of his plays: The Shadow of a Gunman, directed by Ciarán O’Reilly (beginning January 31), Juno and the Paycock, directed by Neil Pepe (beginning March 9), and the aforementioned The Plough and the Stars, directed by Charlotte Moore (beginning April 20).

Each play will be presented in an individual run in the order in which they were written, culminating in a month of all three works in repertory. The final month will feature three “Dublin Saturdays” in which all three plays will be performed in one day in order of their historical settings—The Easter Rising (1916), The Irish War of Independence (1921), and the Irish Civil War (1922).

Casting will be announced at a future date.

The O’Casey Cycle will also feature free readings of all of O’Casey’s other plays, as well as symposiums, lectures, film screenings, a musical evening, and two exhibitions.

The productions will feature scenic design by Charlie Corcoran (On Beckett), costume design by Linda Fisher (Three Small Irish Masterpieces) and David Toser (It’s A Wonderful Life), lighting design by Michael Gottlieb (A Child’s Christmas in Wales), sound design by Ryan Rumery (The Seafarer) and M. Florian Staab (On A Clear Day You Can See Forever), and properties by Deirdre Brennan (The Dead, 1904). April Ann Kline (It’s A Wonderful Life) and Arthur Atkinson (On A Clear Day You Can See Forever) will serve as production stage managers.
