Lincoln Center honored nine-time Tony Award recipient and Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Sondheim at its American Songbook Gala June 19. The evening, directed by longtime collaborator Lonny Price, featured Ashley Park (Mean Girls), Kate Baldwin (Hello, Dolly!), Donny Murphy (Hello, Dolly!), and Petula Clark (Blood Brothers) saluting the theatre luminary in a musical tribute directed by Paul Gemignani.
Proceeds from the evening supported Lincoln Center’s education and community initiatives as well as the American Songbook series and additional performance series.

Inside Lincoln Center’s American Songbook Gala Honoring Stephen Sondheim
As previously announced, Sondheim is set to join Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown for his SubCulture Residency Concert at New York City’s Town Hall June 24. With a 16-piece orchestra, the theatrical giants will play alongside each other in an evening of songs from both of their repertoires, featuring new arrangements by Brown of many of Sondheim’s tunes. The evening will also Sondheim and Brown in conversation about each other’s work.
The work, which made its world premiere Off-Broadway in 2022, takes place in an Iranian classroom where adult students practice for an English language proficiency exam.
