Veteran stage and screen actor Ian McKellen is marking his 80th birthday with a new autobiographical solo show that will tour to 80 stages across the U.K. in 2019. Ian McKellen On Stage will kick off January 25, 2019, at London's The Space and will continue through September 15 in a sold-out performance at the National Theatre’s Olivier.
Among the special stops on the tour will be a late-night performance at the Donmar Warehouse on March 1, which will be offered for free to theatregoers aged 25 and under through the Donmar’s YOUNG+FREE program. Click here to sign up.
McKellen—who is the subject of the recent documentary film McKellen: Playing The Part—will visit theatres large and small, many that hold personal connections, including amateur groups he knew as a child and notable playhouses he has played in as a professional actor over the last half-century.
The actor will mark his 80th birthday on May 25 with a sold-out performance at The Albert Halls in Bolton, where he spent his boyhood.
"I wanted to celebrate my 80th birthday in Bolton, where I grew up and discovered in its three professional theatres, a passion for acting, which has never faded," he said in a statement. "In the Town Hall, where my father was Borough Engineer, I’ll feel at home and grateful for all that Bolton nurtured in me at Bolton School, the Little Theatre and in Barrow Bridge where we lived close to the moors. All profits will help with new seating in the Albert Halls Theatre. Happy Birthday to me! See you there, I hope!
