The Catered Affair, the short-lived 2007 Broadway chamber musical featuring a book by Harvey Fierstein and a score by John Bucchino, gets a concert staging with students from NYU Steinhardt School of Music’s Vocal Performance Program September 30-October 2.
Based on the 1956 film, also titled The Catered Affair, the musical centers on a struggling Bronx family who must decide whether to spend their life savings on starting a new business, or to throw their only daughter a lavish, catered wedding.
Fierstein’s adaptation re-envisioned the family dynamic for the stage. The character of Winston, who lives with his adult sister and her family, is a single gay man, who must confront his own family’s ignorance.
Christopher Murrah directs with musical direction by Caleb Hoyer and assistant musical direction by Bob Kelly. Lighting design is by Cheyenne Sykes.
The cast includes Michelle Cosentino, Matthew Hougland, Christopher Sapp, Eric Sand, Jake Friedman, Cynthia Bonacum, Jacklyn Klimczak, Corinne Minor, Stephanie VanAlstine and Elle Fellerhoff.
Performances take place at the Provincetown Playhouse, 133 MacDougal Street, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan.
Tickets are $5. For details visit tickets.nyu.edu.
