Oscar and Tony Award winner Joel Grey celebrated his birthday at Fiddler on the Roof Off-Broadway April 11. Prior to the performance, the cast and crew of the Off-Broadway hit joined Grey onstage to honor the theatre luminary.
The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene production, directed by Grey, was extended through September 1 after breaking the house box office records at Stage 42. The production stars Steven Skybell as Tevye, Jennifer Babiak as his wife Golde, and Emmy nominee and Broadway veteran Jackie Hoffman as matchmaker Yente. It opened at Stage 42 on February 21 following an earlier Off-Broadway run.

NYTF's Fiddler on the Roof initially played Off-Broadway at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, before moving uptown to its current home. Like all productions mounted by NYTF, Fiddler on the Roof is performed entirely in Yiddish, featuring a translation by Shraga Friedman, first used in a performance in Israel in 1965.
Surrounded by period accurate 19th-century holiday decorations lit via candlelight, the 70-minute production is based on Dickens' own script of the classic.
