Well-known theatre photographer Matthew Murphy actually began his career in the performing arts as a dancer at the School of American Ballet, performing with American Ballet Theatre. Now, in his capacity as a professional photographer, he has captured some of the most iconic shows on Broadway in recent years.
"My transition out of the ballet world is a heartbreaking but unique story," Murphy says in the video above about his early start and his eventual transition from performing to capturing performances. But that background serves him well as a photographer who specializes in theatre and dance. After photographing Hairspray at the Hollywood Bowl for Jerry Mitchell, he was brought in to photograph Mitchell’s then-new project. The show was Kinky Boots, which went on to win the Tony Award for best musical and launched Murphy's new career.
See Murphy talk about that and more in the latest installment of From Ballet to Broadway.
