Songbird, written by Michael Kimmel (The Last Goodbye) with music and lyrics by Lauren Pritchard (Spring Awakening), began performances June 9 at Two River Theater.
Directed by Gaye Taylor Upchurch (The Last Match, Animal), the Nashville-set musical plays the Red Bank, New Jersey, venue through July 1. Songbird drops Chekhov’s The Seagull into a bar in Nashville, where some country music dreams are realized, while others languish.
The cast includes Ephie Aardema as Mia, Felicia Finley as Tammy Trip, Deon'te Goodman as Rip, Kelly Karbacz as Pauline, Drew McVety as Doc, Eric William Morris as Beck, Kacie Sheik as Missy, Marrick Smith as Dean, Bob Stillman as Soren, and Andy Taylor as Samuel.
The production features music direction, arrangements, and orchestrations by Kris Kukul, choreography by Marc Kimelman, scenic design by Jason Sherwood, costume design by Sarah J. Holden, lighting design by Aaron Porter, and sound design by Broken Chord.
Surrounded by period accurate 19th-century holiday decorations lit via candlelight, the 70-minute production is based on Dickens' own script of the classic.
