Harlem Stage kicked off a free, five-week run of Antigone in Ferguson September 13 featuring a rotating cast of actors including The Handmaid’s Tale Emmy winner Samira Wiley as Antigone (September 25–30).
Drawing from the the tragic death of Michael Brown in 2014, the adaptation uses Sophocles’ original text combined with live choral music performed by a choir of activists, police officers, youth, and concerned citizens from Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City.
Presented as a staged reading, the production is a collaboration between Harlem Stage, Theater of War Productions, and community members from Ferguson. Following each performance, there will be a moderated conversation on race and social justice.
Throughout the run, a roster of actors will join the presentation. Other cast members include Paul Giamatti (Billions), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: SVU), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), Adepero Oduye (12 Years a Slave), Frankie Faison (The Wire), and Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent).
