Chicago News Entire Run of Goodman Theatre's Pamplona Canceled as Stacy Keach Recovers The veteran actor fell ill onstage during the opening night performance of the new play about Ernest Hemingway.

Chicago’s Goodman Theatre has canceled the entire run of Jim McGrath’s new solo drama Pamplona, days after the show’s star—veteran actor Stacy Keach—fell ill onstage during the play’s May 30 opening night performance.

Though the theatre company remained hopeful that performances would resume, a June 2 announcement stated that the entire run had been canceled after Keach underwent medical testing this week.

“According to Keach’s family, doctors treating the stage and screen star have advised a period of rest and recuperation; as such, the Goodman has made the decision to cancel the remainder of the run. Out of respect for Keach and his family’s wishes for privacy, there are no additional comments at this time,” the Goodman said in a statement.

Keach, who portrayed literary giant Ernest Hemingway, was the sole actor in the 80-minute play that began previews May 19. Set in Pamplona, Spain, in 1959—the play dramatizes a late-in-life Hemingway as he struggles to finish his life’s work.

Pamplona has been the rare, joyous process working with a friend and colleague to realize a passion project,” Robert Falls, the Tony-winning Goodman Theatre artistic director who helmed the prodcution, stated. “Stacy Keach is one of America’s finest actors, and he and playwright Jim McGrath have rendered a beautiful and complex new piece of theater about an American icon that audiences in 11 preview performances had the opportunity to witness and reward with tremendous enthusiasm and standing ovations,” Falls said in a statement. “I am in awe of the work Stacy has done, and especially of the courage he’s displayed in the face of adversity, and I look forward to our future collaborations. We also wish to thank our Chicago audiences and members of the media for their gracious support during this unusual circumstance.”
