Atlantic Theater Company has announced a second extension for the world-premiere staging of Itamar Moses and David Yazbek’s The Band’s Visit; the new musical will now play through January 8, 2017. The show had previously sold out its limited engagement at Atlantic’s Linda Gross Theater.
The new Off-Broadway musical officially opened December 8 to a large number of positive reviews from New York City critics, and sold out the remainder of its run shortly after. Another extension was announced December 14, with a new batch of tickets made available.
The Band’s Visit is based on the award-winning film of the same name and features a cast that includes Something Rotten!'s John Cariani, Katrina Lenk (Once), and Monk star Tony Shalhoub. Based on Eran Kolirin’s screenplay, the story follows the unlikely meeting of an Egyptian police band and a group of locals in a small Israeli town. The show, which began performances November 11, is directed by David Cromer with choreography by Patrick McCollum and movement by Lee Sher.
The cast also includes George Abud, Bill Army, Erik Liberman, Andrew Polk, Rachel Prather, Jonathan Raviv, Sharone Sayegh, Kristen Sieh, Ari’el Stachel, Daniel David Stewart, and Alok Tewari.
The new musical follows the story of an Egyptian police band that arrives in Israel to play a concert. When a mix-up at the border leaves them stranded with no bus or hotel in sight, these unlikely travelers must seek the help of the locals. “Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways,“ state Atlantic Theater production notes. The musical features a book by Drama Desk Award nominee Moses and music and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Yazbek.
Patti LuPone, Gabby Beans, Susan Stroman, André Bishop, and more are featured in this special look back, along with clips from War Horse, The Light in the Piazza, South Pacific, and more.
The new work from playwright Liana Sonenclar follows a high school track star forced to confront some tricky feelings when she reconnects with a former teammate.
