An Australian engagement of Come From Away will play Melbourne in 2019. The production will open July 20 at the Comedy Theatre, which will undergo renovations prior to the musical’s bow.
Casting and additional information will be announced at a later date.
The musical, which earned director Christopher Ashley a Tony Award in 2017, continues to play Broadway’s Schoenfeld Theatre. A Toronto staging is now running at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, and a national tour will launch in Seattle in October.
Featuring a score by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, the musical tells the story of the unexpected community that formed when thousands of airline passengers suddenly became stranded in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Through the processing of unthinkable tragedy and culture clashes, the unexpected visitors and locals managed to form enduring bonds.Sankoff, Hein, and Ashley are also at work on a film adaptation.
