Featuring a score by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, the musical tells the story of the unexpected community that formed when thousands of airline passengers suddenly became stranded in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Through the processing of unthinkable tragedy and culture clashes, the unexpected visitors and locals managed to form enduring bonds.
Director Christopher Ashley received a Tony Award for his work; in addition to Best Musical and Colella, the production also received nods for Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s Book and Score, choreographer Kelly Devine, and lighting designer Howell Binkley
The musical also continues to play Broadway's Schoenfeld Theatre; a Toronto staging is now running at the Royal Alexanda Theatre, and the Australian premiere is due to open in July at Melbourne's Comedy Theatre.
