Music Theatre International has secured worldwide amateur and professional licensing rights to Come From Away, the new Broadway musical that explores the lasting connection forged between a group of travelers whose planes were diverted to a small Newfoundland town during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
“Having seen Come From Away in Toronto last year and now the reaction on Broadway, it is abundantly clear to me that this exciting new show is an uplifting crowd-pleaser that brings great joy to audiences of all ages. We see the best of humankind in the characters on stage and come out wanting to be better citizens of the world. I have no doubt that Come From Away will be a favorite among MTI's customers in North America and around the world," said Drew Cohen, president of MTI Worldwide, in a statement.
A release date for licensing rights has not been set.
Come From Away features book, music, and lyrics by the Canadian husband-and-wife team Irene Sankoff and David Hein (My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding). It officially opens March 12 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
The musical arrives in New York after playing try-outs in Toronto, Washington, D.C., Seattle Repertory Theatre, and La Jolla Playhouse.
Here's how it's billed: “In a heartbeat, 38 planes and 6,579 passengers were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, doubling the population of one small town on the edge of the world. On September 11, 2001 the world stopped. On September 12, their stories moved us all.”
