Stage and screen alum Chris Diamantopoulos will step into Broadway’s Waitress as Dr. Pomatter. He’ll begin performances March 31, taking over for the production’s original leading man, Drew Gehling.
Also joining the cast that day is the musical’s composer, Grammy and Tony Award nominee Sara Bareilles. The singer-songwriter assumes the role of Jenna from Tony winner Jessie Mueller. Gehling takes his final bow at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre March 30; Mueller departs the production March 26.

Diamantopoulos last appeared on Broadway in 2000’s The Full Monty. He made his Broadway debut as Marius in Les Misérables. His screen credits include an Emmy-nominated turn voicing the title rodent in the recent animated Mickey Mouse series, Good Girls Revolt, Silicon Valley, and Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Mork & Mindy.
The current cast also includes Tony nominee Christopher Fitzgerald as Ogie, Eric Anderson as Cal, Charity Angél Dawson as Becky, Caitlin Houlahan as Dawn, Dakin Matthews as Joe, and William Popp as Earl.
Based on the 2007 film of the same title, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, an expert pie maker in a small town, who dreams of a way out of her loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a new life, while her fellow waitresses (Dawson and Houlahan) offer their own recipes to happiness. But Jenna must find the courage and strength within herself to rebuild her life.
