Performances begin February 26 at Theatre Row for the New York premiere of Surely Goodness and Mercy by Chisa Hutchinson. The play, which received a rolling world premiere from the National New Play Network, tells the story of an exceptional boy living a troubled life, who does a good deed for an often unnoticed person.
Directed by Jessi D. Hill, Surely Goodness and Mercy kicks off the Keen Company's 2019 programming. Leading the cast is 19-year-old newcomer Jay Mazyck, an alumnus of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, making his Off-Broadway debut.
Mazyck plays Tino, a Bible-toting boy from Newark, New Jersey, with a photographic memory who befriends the cantankerous old lunch lady, Bernadette—played by Brenda Pressley (The Lyons, The American Plan). Rounding out the cast are Sarita Covington, Courtney Thomas, and Cezar Williams.
Performances of Surely Goodness and Mercy are scheduled through April 13.
Hutchinson is the playwright of Somebody's Daughter and Dead and Breathing, among other works.
The design team for Surely Goodness and Mercy is made up of Lee Savage (scenic), Nicole Wee (costumes), Devorah Kengmana (lighting), and Sadah Espii Proctor (sound).
