The Broadway premiere of Anaïs Mitchell’s folk opera is currently in previews at the Walter Kerr Theatre ahead of an April 17 opening. The production, directed by Rachel Chavkin, returns to New York following an acclaimed run at London’s National Theatre.
Hadestown which first premiered Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, offers a new, musical interpretation of Orpheus’ mythical quest to overcome Hades and regain his true love, Eurydice. Reeve Carney (Orpheus), André De Shields (Hermes), Amber Gray (Persephone), Eva Noblezada (Eurydice), and Patrick Page (Hades) lead the company, reprising their performances from the National Theatre.
Joining them are Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, and Kay Trinidad as the Fates, with Afra Hines, Timothy Hughes, John Krause, Kimberly Marable, and Ahmad Simmons in the chorus of Workers. Malcolm Armwood, T. Oliver Reid, Jessie Shelton, and Khalia Wilcoxon will serve as swings.
The production features choreography by David Neumann, musical direction by Liam Robinson, orchestrations by Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose, sets by Rachel Hauck, costumes by Michael Krass, lighting design by Bradley King, and sound design by Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz. Casting is by Stewart/Whitley.
