Tony Award winner Bette Midler appeared on Good Morning America August 9 in a one-on-one interview with Robin Roberts to mark her return to Broadway’s Hello, Dolly!.
After 242 performances, Midler left the show in January, when Tony winner Bernadette Peters took over the role.
“I literally crawled off the stage the last performance,” she said. But now, she’s ready to be back. “I was excited to come back because I love [this cast]. I missed them, and I missed the crowds, and I missed her. I missed Dolly. She's a wonderful confection.
“I’m raucous, and I give people a good time and I think people really like to have a good time. That piece of Americana has been missing for so long.”
But more than what she gives to her audience, Midler has taken away a lot from her time on Broadway. “The experience of doing this show changed my life,” she says. “I should have paid them—don't tell them.”
