MCC Theater celebrates the opening of the Off-Broadway premiere of Aziza Barnes' BLKS May 9. Robert O’Hara directs the new comedy, previously seen in Chicago, from the poet and playwright.
Set over the course of a day as humorous as it is painful, BLKS follows a trio of 20something women hunting for intimacy and purpose in New York City. Leading the cast are School Girls' Paige Gilbert, Is God Is' Alfie Fuller, and Antoinette Crowe-Legacy (If Pretty Hurts Ugly Must Be a Muhfucka) as Octavia, Imani, and June.
Performances of BLKS began April 23 in the Newman Mills Theater at The Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space.
Rounding out the cast Off-Broadway are Marié Botha, Chris Myers, and Coral Peňa.
The production features scenic design by Clint Ramos, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Alex Jainchill, sound design by Palmer Hefferan, and casting by Telsey + Company/Adam Caldwell, CSA, William Cantler, CSA, Karyn Casl, CSA. The production stage manager is Brett Anders.
The world premiere of BLKS was produced and presented at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. The play was developed at the Ojai Playwrights Conference.
