The acclaimed, site-specific theatrical presentation of the 1954 film musical A Star Is Born, which features Molly Pope as Esther Blodgett (played by Judy Garland on screen), returns to Feinstein’s/54 Below September 28 at 9:30 PM.
The encore performance promises a “recently-rediscovered” Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin song, “I’m Off the Down Beat,” written for the original film, but never used.
The musical event premiered July 12 at Feinstein’s/54 Below. It has musical staging by Ben Cameron and staging by Pope.
Including such songs as “The Man That Got Away,” “Gotta Have Me Go With You” and the “Born In a Trunk Medley,” the event is billed as “a thrilling re-examination of the music, the showmanship and the heartbreak of A Star Is Born.”
A Star Is Born has music direction by Brian Nash and choreography by Sidney Erik. Pope is joined on stage by Danny Bevins and Brian Beach.
DW designed Pope’s gown for the evening. The band features Nash, Jeremy Yaddaw, Adam Neely and Rob Mosher.
Pope appeared Off-Broadway in Found at the Atlantic Theatre Company. She regularly performs at Joe’s Pub and The Duplex. Pope has also appeared as part of Provincetown’s Afterglow Festival, the Cabaret Convention at Jazz At Lincoln Center and 15:54 at 54 Below.
