Based on the Henry James novel "Washington Square," Ruth and Augustus Goetz’s The Heiress is set in the world of 1850s New York City high society. Socially awkward, plain Catherine Sloper (played by Jessica Chastain, an Oscar nominee for "The Help") cowers under her domineering father, Dr. Austin Sloper (David Strathairn ), who blames her for causing her mother's death in childbirth. When poor but handsome suitor Morris Townsend ("Downton Abbey" star Dan Stevens ) arrives, Catherine falls for him — much to the chagrin of her father, who insists the caller only wants the money she will inherit. Moisés Kaufman directs the production at the Walter Kerr Theatre, now playing through Feb. 10. For more on the revival, click here.
