The 2002 Helen Hayes Awards, presented May 6, spread the wealth around DC's resident theatres, honoring the Signature and Shakespeare Theatres with three wins each, as well as pairs of citations to the Studio, Rep Stage, Arena Stage and the Round House. The Kennedy Center, presenter of the Dirty Blonde tour as well as Brit imports Mill on the Floss and A Servant of Two Masters garnered a trio of awards.

Tours of Kiss Me, Kate, Dirty Blonde and the pre-Broadway visit of King Hedley II are among nominees for the 2002 Helen Hayes Awards, announced March 11, honoring the best resident and visiting theatre artists and productions of the past year in Washington, DC.
Broadway producers, who are scared stiff by the greased-up toboggan-sled qualities of the current economy, apparently believe there is but one weapon in their arsenal that will slay this show-killer. That is: stars. Preferably stars in play, which cost less to produce than musicals, but stars regardless.
