John Cunningham (Performer) Obituary

Actor John Cunningham died January 6, at the age of 93. News of his passing was confirmed by his family, who stated that he passed "in his beloved Victorian home aside the 11th hole at Rye Golf Club."

A veteran character actor of the stage and screen, Mr. Cunningham's musical theatre career famously began in 1960 when he was plucked from obscurity by Moss Hart. Unagented and freshly out of the Army, Mr. Cunningham understudied the role of Henry Higgins at just 27 in the first national tour of My Fair Lady. With such an auspicious credit to his name, he then returned to New York, where he became a near constant presence.

Mr. Cunningham made his Broadway debut in the short-lived Mary Rodgers musical Hot Spot, but far greater successes were just over the horizon. On Broadway, Mr. Cunningham starred in 16 different productions, including the original Broadway runs of Cabaret, Zorba, 1776, Company, The Good Doctor, California Suite, Rose, Sunday in the Park with George, Six Degrees of Separation, Anna Karenina, The Sisters Rosensweig, Titanic, and Amour. He also tread the boards in revivals of The Devil's Disciple and Design for Living.

On screen, Mr. Cunningham starred in Mystic Pizza, Dead Poets Society, School Ties, For Love or Money, and many, many more. In addition to his on traditional screen work on film and television, Mr. Cunningham contributed to countless commercials via his chameleonic voiceover work, adopting a wide variety of accents for different brands.

Mr. Cunningham is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Carolyn Cotton Cunningham, as well are their three children, Christopher, Catherine, and Laura, six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and his caregiver of nearly three years, who the family particularly honors.

His family will host a memorial service at Rye Presbyterian Church, 882 Boston Post Road in Rye (and online via Zoom through the Church's website) January 17 at 1:30 PM ET. A brief reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Cunningham's family suggests donations to one of his favorite charities, the Entertainment Community Fund.
